Try each one on paper first, then check a single step. That is worth far more than reading a finished solution.
Example 3 — domain and range from a rule
The function f(x)=x2 has domain {−2,−1,0,1,2}. State the range.
- 1The domain lists the inputs; substitute each one.
- 2f(−2)=(−2)2=4 and f(−1)=(−1)2=1The bracket means the whole of −2 is squared, so the result is positive.
- 3f(0)=0, f(1)=1, f(2)=4
- 4The outputs are 4,1,0,1,4.
- 5Range ={0,1,4}A set does not repeat values, so 1 and 4 are each listed once.
